Let good money
sense rain
(or shine).

We Brits love talking about the weather. But did you know the shifting seasons can often affect our financial behaviour too?

Some of us are winter fritterers who are more likely to treat ourselves when the cold and wet kicks in. Others are summer splurge’s whose
spending habits heat up with the temperature.

Whichever category you fall into – and yes, some people can be both! – the same need for good money sense applies. Here’s a checklist of three
key questions that can help ensure managing your finances doesn’t become heavy weather.

Why am I buying it?

New winter coat. Summer parties. Christmas. There are plenty of occasions to treat yourself throughout the year. But if you choose to do so, be sure to ask yourself if you’ve got a good reason. “I need it”, “it’s an investment piece”, or “someone I care about would enjoy it” are all perfectly good answers. Keeping up appearances or FOMO – not so much.

Can I afford it?

From the major stuff like a holiday or car, to the everyday treats like meals out, coffees and clothes, always be honest about what you can afford. If you know you’re more likely to spend more in certain months, make sure you plan accordingly. And don’t forget to boost your budget by saving for that rainy (or sunny) day at other times of the year.

How will I pay for it?

Spreading the cost of something over a more manageable period of time can be very helpful. But never forget you always have to pay for it in the end. So, only choose Buy Now Pay Later at checkout if you also have a clear plan for how to cover the payments when they kick in.
